2013 Moxy Syrah
The Basket Pressed Syrah is a wine that links back to Scott's history of working with the Robert Mondavi/Rosemount Estates joint venture. The Australian side of the venture had selected two very special clones of Syrah, from the Penfolds Grange vineyard in the Barossa, to plant in the joint venture vineyard in Paso Robles. Typically syrah yields large clusters with medium to large berries. However these clones produce particularly small clusters and tiny berries. This leads to a concentrated wine with dark color and intense flavors. We fermented this wine in open top fermenters with a combination of punchdowns and pumpovers. Once primary fermentation was complete we pressed off using a basket press. These gentle presses ensure we do not impart any bitterness from the seeds or over pressing the skins. The 2013 Basket Pressed Syrah spent two years in french oak barrels and puncheons. The nose opens with rich black cherry, black pepper and toasty vanilla oak. The soft rich tannins are balanced by great acidity and intense flavors of licorice, cassis and allspice. Enjoy with your favorite grilled meats or an assortment of cheeses.
